Labor rights on Rep. Bello’s agenda
by: Jan Lorenz H. Baliwagan
Serving his second term in the House of Representatives, Rep. Walden F. Bello has prioritized the rights of workers in his legislative agenda as the representative of AKBAYAN, a national political party identifying itself with center-left political causes.
Bello, a sociology and public administration professor in the University of the Philippines – Diliman is a known anti-globalization advocate. He has filed several bills in the 15th Congress focusing on amending the Labor Code. One notable bill is House Bill 303 which aims to strengthen the tenure of private-sector workers by amending parts of the current Labor Code.
Another bill, HB2513, which he proposed, intends to give protection to workers who work for companies that undergo mergers or acquisitions. This is in response to the growing concerns of many employees who are selectively dismissed from their positions after their companies have merged with or has been acquired by other companies.
Other related bills filed by Rep. Bello were HB 2826 and HB 2823 which seek to give more rights to employees in collective bargaining negotiations and labor disputes, respectively.
At present, all of these bills are still waiting to be scheduled for committee hearings in the Labor and Employment Committee of the Lower House.
