Maternal health for women empowerment
By: Genevieve Seguerra
Woman is most empowered when she is pregnant.
However, Philippines is far from achieving the 2015 goal of improving maternal health, fourth among the eight Millenium Development Goals (MDG).
In Caloocan city, maternal health is one of the focuses of Second District Rep. Mary Mitzi Cajayon in her legislative agenda.
She authored House Bill 2612 which requires all hospitals, clinics, health centers and other similar establishments rendering maternity services to establish literacy programs for all expectant parents.
“It is good because expectant mothers can know what to do so as not to be immediately bothered by unnecessary pregnancy issues. (Maganda yun para malaman yun dapat gawin. Hindi yun maliit na bagay lang, nababahala na kagad yung buntis),” Anna Soriano, an expectant mother, said of HB 2612.
The bill will empower first-time mothers who usually skip prenatal check-up resulting from ignorance.
Expectant parents get easily worried when they feel irregular contraction or pain from their midsection not knowing that these are normal signs of pregnancy.
“ When I got pregnant for the first time, I was afraid to be left alone (Nung first time akong nabuntis, takot ako maiwan mag-isa)” said Kristina Cervantes.
Anxiety is normal among first-time mothers but it becomes a problem when they cannot overcome their fear.
Like helpless creatures, the question “What will I do (anong gagawin ko)?” always looms in the back of their mind when they're alone.
“I had many fears (Ang dami kong kinatatakutan.),” Cervantes, who is now a mother of two, recounts “ What if I’m all by myself and I give birth earlier than expected? (Panu kung mag-isa lang ako tapos manganak ako ng maaga?)”
Rep. Cajayon also authored HB 366 which is for mandatory pregnancy testing of all women of childbearing age who will undergo cosmetic surgery.
Women who do not know that they are pregnant and undergo cosmetic surgery are in danger while their baby is equally at risk.
Aside from keeping women aware of the dangers of pregnancy, the bill also protects women as it can help detect sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
In addition, Rep. Cajayon passed HB1925 which provides for the establishment and funding of women’s health care centers in every region nationwide.
